In an era where social media has become a rather significant part of our lives, employers of some industries aren’t just checking LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter to vet candidates. They are also turning to Instagram in order to try and understand their personality traits beyond a mere resume. Although Instagram is not considered a professional platform it has become yet another place to portray your originality and unique personality traits. With our lives quickly becoming a part of the digital world, almost every aspect has become more visual oriented than it was over a decade or two ago. This is where platforms such as Instagram come into play, where you get to share and engage based on their passion towards certain areas mutual interests and provide a unique spin to it.
Is Instagram the best fit for me?
Now this is a question that you need to ask yourself before you make the decision of making a profile. Ofcourse some have already made their profiles for their personal use but if you are still on the fence about things then do a bit of research before you jump in. What field do you wish to grow your career in? Do most of the successful professionals in the field have an active Instagram profile? And finally, does it make sense for me to have one? And will it fit my personality? These are some of the questions that you first need to address before you make the final decision.
What should and shouldn’t be posted?
If you have made the choice to start Instagram or if you have already got one then this is the next question you should ask yourself. If you have an active profile, then go back and have a good hard look at what you have posted. Look at your profile from a potential employer or recruiters point of view. Does the profile portray your personality, interests and opinions? Or is it just another stream of selfies that you took every day of the week. Not that an occasional selfie is a bad thing but if it exceeds 10 in a span of a week. Then maybe you need to rethink your decisions. Share posts such as quotes from the industry, along with those that relate to your interests and leisure activities. Basically, keep a balanced profile, that would look attractive to anyone that looks through any perspective.
Connect and engage but never over do it
It is important, as it is in any social media platform to connect with profile that share mutual interests. Find profiles that are in your interested industry and connect, comment and like posts that you enjoy. Keep your profile engaged in the profiles that stand strong in the industry. Although don’t go too far, to the point where you use hashtags that are used by brands that in industries where you don’t have much knowledge or interest in. Explore new things but keep your limits at the same time.
Instagram is a place that you get to express yourself in a visual form and that gives you the power to portray yourself in the most creative ways. Much like any social media platform, the key is to be yourself and follow where your personality and passion takes you. Trends come and go but the choice to follow or not is up to you.
